September 2017
The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised its second inter-college Model United Nations Conference on the 8th, 9th, and 10th of September 2017, but this time with an aim to inspire people to speak up with its hashtag as #RisethisFall.
It became India’s second largest MUN conference that year with 11 committees and collaborations with the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan. MUN societies such as Dhaka University MUN Association, SMIT MUN, Patna Youth Parliament Conclave, Ranevshaw University Model United Nations, Indian Luminary MUN, BITSMUN, St. Stephens MUN, Techfest MUN of IIT Bombay and the University of Hyderabad MUN, brought in delegates from all over the south Asian region.
It also became one of the few MUN conferences to have a Day 0 concept. A day 0 is an introductory ceremony one day before the conference. BESC AON 2017 introduced its Day 0 to the enthusiastic participants with a keynote speaker session with Major General GD Bakshi on India’s military power.
With 500+ participants coming from different esteemed institutions all over the country, the college witnessed furious debates in committees such as:
- The West Bengal Legislative Assembly with topics to be covered under the then monsoon session.
- The United Nations General Assembly – First Committee – Disarmament and International Security to prevent the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction by violent non-state actors.
- The United Nations General Assembly – Second Committee – Economic and Financial to discuss the role of ICTs in development and the situation of LDCs and LLDCs.
- The United Nations General Assembly – Third Committee – Social and Humanitarian to find a method to eliminate racism, xenophobia and racial discrimination.
